the hurricanes emotorsports honda driver started 16th after being disqualified in the qualifying session, overcame a pair of spins, then navigated a pair of safety cars to take the chequered flag at the virtual circuit de spa-francorchamps, taking the championship lead in the process.
macaulay, who also took the bonus point for the fastest lap with a time of 1:46.079 seconds, finished 6.967 seconds clear of the mcracelab honda of mark cox, who finished second after qualifying 17th, while michael dimitroff made it a honda sweep of the top three places, taking his first podium finish for alpha flow in third.
zach sullivan finished fourth for north border racing, while the ares racing ferrari of darcy ford rounded out the top five after starting on pole.
mike marini came home sixth in his true north racin’ renault, followed closely by the second alpha flow of daniel cudmore (seventh) and the 519 e-racing bugatti of jason butler (eighth).
don kasza took ninth in the second north border racing ferrari, while cody cudmore took the final point in tenth in his silver hornet mercedes.
macaulay now leads sullivan by 10 points in the driver’s standings, while north border racing’s lead in the constructor’s table over hurricanes emotorsports is down to just seven points.
known for its unpredictable races, spa-francorchamps immediately lived up to its reputation in qualifying, as cox was disqualified from the session for blocking the pit lane, followed by macaulay being disqualified for going the wrong way on track, putting ford and dimitroff on the front row while ending macaulay’s streak of consecutive pole positions at seven.
as ford jumped out to an early lead, macaulay and cox quickly worked their way through the field on fresh sets of tyres.
however, the first safety car was triggered on lap 4 as seth mcluckie’s true north racin’ renault crashed climbing the hill at eau rouge and raidillon. ford took a five-second penalty for speeding under the safety car, which handed the lead to dimitroff on the restart, though sullivan passed him on the exit of the la source hairpin.
the second safety car came out on lap 8 as angel ortega lost control of his 519 e-racing bugatti and crashed between the campus and stavelot corners, which gave macaulay the lead on the restart as everyone ahead of him pitted.
however, sullivan overtook macaulay for the lead climbing through eau rouge and raidillon on lap 11, and macaulay’s troubles compounded on lap 13 as he spun going through the pouhon double left-hander, dropping to fifth.
macaulay would again work his way back up the field, getting back up to second place on lap 18 while sullivan built his lead to about five seconds. however, sullivan would spin at the bus stop chicane at the end of lap 19, falling to fourth and ceding the lead to macaulay, which he would not relinquish.
the season continues at another classic track next week, as drivers will tackle the autodromo nazionale di monza for the cracked device company italian grand prix next thursday, november 5, with coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. est.
